Reading notes:Arabian nights Aladdin, Part B

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp 1
There once was a poor tailor, who had a son called Aladdin. Aladdin was careless and lazy by who would do nothing but play all day long in the streets with boys just like him. This saddened the father that he died. Even though this tragic event brought many tears to his mother, he did not change his ways.

One day Aladdin went about what he normally does, playing in the streets. A man then approached him and asked him his age and if he was the son of the tailor Mustapha.

" I am the son of Mustapha, although he passed away a long ago."

This man was a famous African Magician and he embraced Aladdin and kiss him. He then said " I am your uncle and recognized you because you resemble my brother so much. Go to your mother and tell her I am here and will go visit."

Aladdin ran home and told his mother of his uncle.

Yes, Aladdin it is true your father had a brother but I always thought he was dead/" replied his mother.

Despite this, she prepared dinner and asked Aladdin to go find his uncle who came with wine and fruit.
He fell to his knees where Mustapha would sit and kissed the floor. He then pleaded to Aladdin and his mother to not be surprised by his visit for he had been out of the country for forty years.

Then the uncle turned to Aladdin and asked him his trade. Aladdin looked down and his mother cried at the question. The uncle learning that his nephew had no trade offered to take a shop for him and stock it with merchandise. The next day he bought Aladdin's fine clothing and showed him all over the city and returned him to his bother once it became night. His mother filled with joy to see her son so fine.

The next day the magician took Aladdin to some beautiful garden outside the city gates and they sat by a fountain sharing a cake the uncle divided between the two. They then continued their journey till they almost reached the mountains. Aladdin exhausted from this begged to go back and the magician kept going distracting him with pleasant stories.

They reached a narrow valley that divided two mountains. The uncle then told Aladdin " I will show you something beautiful, gather sticks and make a fire."

Once the fire was started the magician threw powder on it and said magical words. The earth shook and opened. A flat stone with a brass ring in the middle to raise it by appeared before them. Aladdin scared tried to run but the uncle caught him and knocked him down.

"What are you doing uncle?" asked Aladdin
The uncle said listen to me " beneath this stone is a treasure that no one else must touch, this treasure is yours but you must do exactly what I say."

hearing this, Aladdin's fears left him and he grabbed the ring and said the names of his father and grandfather. The stone came up and steps appeared before him.

The uncle told him " Go down the stairs at the foot of the steps you will find an open door leading into three large halls. Tuck up your gown and go through them but you must not touch anything or death will fall upon you instantly. The halls leading to a garden with trees that hold fine fruit but walk till you reach an area on a terrace where a lighted lamp is. Pour out the oil that the lamp contains and bring it to me."  To this, he took a ring from his finger and gave it to Alaaddin wishing him luck.

The Aladdin found everything the magician had said and gathered fruit and the lamp and arrived at the mouth of the cave. The magician told him in a great hurry to give him the lamp to which Aladdin refused until he was out of the cave. The magician then angered by this threw powder into the fire and said some words and the stone rolled back into its place.

The magician left Persia for ever which revealed that he was no uncle of Aladdin but a magician wanting the lamp to make him the most powerful man on the earth. He only knew where the lamp was but he could only receive it from someone else's hands. That why he picked Aladdin with the intention of killing him once the lamp was in his grasps.

Aladdin remained in the dark crying and lamenting. He held the lamp tightly and prayed. While praying he rubbed the lamp with the ring that the magician gave to him. Immediately a genie came out and said: " What will though ask for I am a slave to the ring and will obey only three things."
