Em's Introduction

Hello! My name is Emily Martinez I am a biology major at OU! The coolest thing about my major is that I've met so many amazing people through it, professors and friends! Also, it has taught me to work really hard for what I want. I also met my boyfriend at OU because we are both biology majors. I don't know if there is a lot that is interesting about me so ill just write some random facts about myself. I am El Salvadoran and originally from California but I don't remember much of California because I moved to pauls valley, Oklahoma when I was 2.  I have four siblings and I am the third out of the four. I have 2 dogs a great Dane named Belle and a german shepherd named Sam. I also have a  bearded dragon named drogon who is a smart little fella! I love to sing but I may not be very good at it. I play a little of the drums but again, not very good at it. I work at express currently which I really like because of the people I've met and it is pushed me to not be as shy anymore. I love to cook and eat! My favorite food would probably be panes Rellenos which is an authentic Salvadoran dish and my least favorite food would have to be chili.  My dream ultimately is to be a PA and to be able to help people around me because I've had so many people help me through my schooling. My noncareer dreams are to be able to travel especially to Malta and Japan! I would also ultimately want to be able to take care of my parents they have worked so hard for my siblings and to put us through school. My mom works as a cleaning lady and my dad works in a warehouse so I hope to be able to repay them one day for all that they have sacrificed for me!

  1. Hi Emily!

It's very nice to meet you! Similarly to you, I like my major of mechanical engineering because it has allowed me the opportunity to meet so many of my close friends, build relationships with professors, and gain experience working at my internships! Additionally, I strive for the day that I'm able to give back to my family for everything that they have so graciously given me to succeed in life!

  2. Hi Emily! I'm also a biology major and it is so sweet that you found your boyfriend who is also in the same major as you! Definitely always have a study buddy and someone who understands the amount of work biology classes require. I actually have family in Pauls Valley! My uncle operates a few hotels in the town, so that so cool you're from Pauls Valley! It is so thoughtful of you to care so much about your parents, I wish you luck on all your future goals!

  3. Howdy, Emily!
First off, can I just say that I adore your animals!
Great, since that is out of the way, nice to meet you! I totally relate to you because I too love to sing and play drums, but I am honestly no good at all, haha. If I had more time to practice I am sure I would be find. I would love to try El Salvadorean food, I do not think I have ever tried any authentic El Salvadorean food, but it is super cool that you love to cook and to carry on your traditions. Anyways, it is great to meet you! I hope to read more of your posts in the future, and good luck with your studies for now!
    Best wishes,
    -Mikayla

  4. Hey Emily! It's cool that you're a biology major! I was never good at biology and couldn't imagine how hard it must be to major in it. Where in California are you from? My parents are form California and we travel to Orange County at least once a year to go visit our family out there. I love the name Dragon for your bearded dragon. I also want to travel to Japan one day as I am half Japanese. Best of luck this semester!

  5. Hi Emily!
As soon as I saw those adorable pictures of those puppies, I was pumped to read your introduction! It's amazing that you have found such a wonderful community within your major. I hope to develop this more myself during these last two years of college. Also, I would be so interested to try El Salvadoran food. I haven't tried it yet!

  6. Hi Emily!

First, I love the photos of your dogs! So precious. Also, my roommate Angi is also El Salvadoran, so now I know two OU students with that heritage! I absolutely love bearded dragons, I think they would be such an interesting pet. I love that you want to help people in your career, and I totally agree with the hoping to be able to take care of your parents. Mine are also really hard-workers, and I just found out my dad may not be able to retire when he gets to retirement age. It made me really sad and worried.

Good luck with finishing up school!

  7. Hi Emily!

I am a microbiology major, so maybe we have had some classes together in the past! Most of my close friends are from my classes/major as well, and now that I am taking upper division courses, I feel like I know almost everyone in my classes. Your dogs look so friendly! I used to want a bearded dragon as a pet when I was a kid, but it never happened. Good luck with PA school!

  8. It is so exciting to have someone from El Salvador in the class this semester, Emily! In a course about World Mythology and Folklore, the more countries and cultures and languages, the better! And this has to be the first bearded dragon who has made an appearance in a post for this class: wow! Of course I had to go Google and find out just what bearded dragons are exactly: what a wonderful pet to have.
And I wish we could arrange a magical field trip to actually go to Japan... but there are some Japanese reading units coming up, so you can at least visit the stories of Japan. The Japanese fairy tale tradition is pretty amazing; there are also these lovely old fairy tale books with beautiful illustrations online here if you are curious: Japanese Fairy Tale series ... I love books with illustrations, which is one of my favorite things about working online. We can be surrounded by images! Including images of dogs and bearded dragons too! I hope you Drogon will appear in a story in class sometime this semester: there are dragon and lizard stories in the UnTextbook for sure. :-)

  9. Hi Emily! What has drawn you to study biology? I find all of the sciences incredibly fascinating but very quickly they make me feel really dumb. How do you like Norman compared to Pauls Valley? I've only ever been there (Pauls Valley) once but I thought it was a neat little town (and that is not meant to sound like a slight in any way). Your dogs are adorable! I'm curious what is it about Malta that makes you want to travel there some day? Good luck with everything!

  10. Hi Emily! Glad to know there is another Latina in the class (I am from Caracas, Venezuela). Your dogs are beautiful, and Drogon seems like a sweet little guy! I think it's great that your dream is to travel to Malta and Japan; people usually think of Italy or Greece when they talk about their dream vacation, and though there is nothing wrong with those places I really like that your destinations are so original. On a side note, if you like to sing and play the drums, who cares if you aren't that good at it, do it just because it's fun! Looking forward to reading more from you throughout the semester, saludos!

  11. Hi Emily! You're dogs are so cute! I think it's wonderful you're enjoying your major and wanting to use it to help others. I feel the same way about my major in chemical engineering. I also value the importance of giving back to your family and I can't wait for the day until I am able to do so. I've never heard of Malta but it's awesome you love to travel. I wanted to play drums so bad when I was younger but my parents made me play piano! Is it possible to sing and play the drums?

  12. Hey Emily!

I am glad you enjoy biology! I am in an intro bio class this semester for one of my graduation requirements and... lets's just say it isn't my favorite class. I think what it can teach us is so valuable, but I definitely prefer my psychology classes. I have always wanted a bearded dragon. They are so cool and are very cunning little creatures. Your Great Dane has beautiful coloration and looks like a huge sweetheart. It is really awesome that you play the drums and I bet you're better than you think. I play the guitar.. but have wanted to learn the drums as well. My mom told me that was too loud of an instrument growing up, haha. Best of luck in the last half of this semester!

  13. Hi Emily! Biology is so fun. I have a drastically different major (criminology) but the best part about mine is also the people that I’ve met along the way. I’ve always wanted to have a Great Dane! They’re such sweet animals. Belle and Sam are adorable. Bearded dragons are the coolest little creatures! My friend has one and I love it like it’s my own! Best of luck this semester!

  14. Hey Emily,

It's great to meet you! Your pets look awesome! I really admire that you want to eventually take care of your parents. It sounds like they've put a lot of work into helping you get to where you are at, and it's always nice to see those people be rewarded for the sacrifices they've made. Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  15. Hey Emily!

First off as a fellow dog owner I have to say that I love the inclusion of them (my dog is a West highland Terrier named Charlie). I also level with not playing an instrument for a long time as I tried to teach myself piano when I was younger, but tried recently and it went really bad. Good luck the rest of this semester with your writing!

  16. Hi Emily! Nice to meet you (well... sort of meet you...)! I love your dogs! We thought my puppy was part great dane for a little it but it turns out she's more hound than anything. I think it's super cool that you want to be a PA! I've received better care from PAs than doctors regularly, and I think they are really vital to making sure the general population stays healthy. Good luck with your semester!

  17. Hi Emily! Sorry I'm just getting to your blog so late in the semester, but it's nice to meet you! I'm a dog lover, too, but my own fur child is in Mexico with my boyfriend, so I've been seriously deprived. Your dogs are really cute, and Drogon, too! Bearded dragons are so cool, but I've never heard of them being clever, but that doesn't surprise me. Being a PA is a really important job, especially nowadays, so thanks for pursuing that career! Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  18. Hi Emily,
Wow, I didn't know I hadn't commented on everyone's blogs' yet. Uhm, I love your dogs. I miss my dogs so much. I admire you for wanting to be a PA. I don't even see a doctor anymore, I just see a PA and think that is super cool. I wish the best to you on your endeavors and wish you an amazing journey. Good luck with the last 2 weeks!
