Week 3 Story: The True Beginning of the Trojan war: The Face that Launched a Thousand Ships

Image
This is the story of how the great Trojan War started. Many people think they know the cause of this great war that ended in the demise of Prince Hector the great and the most powerful man in battle Achilles. Many do not know that the story people commonly know of how the great war began is not the complete truth. Through this story, you will learn how this war truly started and it was all because of the wrath of the most beautiful woman, Helen. Helen the daughter of the Spartan king was the most beautiful of all the women in Greece. She stole the heart of any man who set eyes on her and was even compared to have the beauty of Aphrodite herself. This was because Aphrodite had blessed this child with great beauty. Helen's mother prayed to aphrodite and honored her greatly and the goddess had a great affection for Helen's mother. She was so pleased that she blessed Helen with radiant beauty unlike any other. After her mothers passing early in Helen's life, aphrodite still

The Rousing of Achilles  Story source: The Iliad,  retold by Alfred J. Church (1907). The fight grew more when they fought for the body of Patroclus. Many men of both sides fell at this time. When hector approached the ship of Menelaüs he thrust his spear at him but he did so in vain. Hector stood over the body of Patroclus and Menelaüs knew he could not win in a battle against Hector. Hector then spoiled the armor that Achilles let Patroclus went and did Patroclus a great dishonor. When Hector then attempted to drag the body back to the Trojans when Ajax put his shield before it defending it from Hector and his men. Ajax with great courage and strength defended the body of Patroclus. Like a mother defending its child from harm so fearless did Ajax the Greater fight. Hector seeing his great resolve drew back. Glaucus in great anger spoke to hector saying" Have you no shame, Hector! You let the Trojans leave freely with Patroclus's corps. You were a coward befor

Iliad: How the War with Troy Began  These stories is part of the Iliad retold by Alfred J. Church (1907). There once was a great king of Sparta who had the most gorgeous daughter named Helen. Every prince in Greece who knew of Helen's beauty wanted to marry her. The king asked something of these princes: " You must all give your word to me to be kind to the man my daughter chooses to be her husband. Give your word to me that if there ever is a man who does wrong and steals her from her husband, you must help him get her back from the thief." They all give their word to do so. The beautiful Helen chose a prince to marry who went by the name Menelaüs and who was brother to Agamemnon. Agamemnon was the chief of all kings of Greece. Time had passed and Helen's father died, and Menelaüs reigned as king of Sparta. Helen and Menelaüs lived a pleasant life in Sparta until a young Prince, Paris, arrived. Prince Paris who was the son of the king of Troy, Priam, stole He

Feedback Thoughts

Awesome Quote :) I really enjoyed reading the articles I chose! They put a new perspective on accepting mistakes as being human comes with imperfections. These articles shed new light on how I really let self-doubt take control over so many aspects of my life. They showed me how I constantly tend to give in to the negative voices in my head telling me I'm not good enough or that someone else is better equipped to do it. I hope these articles gave people a new perspective as it did to me. The first article I chose to read was Silence the Critical Voices in Your Head by Sabina Nawaz. This article spoke of how people are naturally wired to react more to negative feedback than positive. It also showed how people tend to really fixate on these negative voices in their heads which can eventually limit your progress and growth in life. She gave an example of this gentleman who was successful and as his success grew he would tend to worry and fall into listening to his own doubts

Topic Brainstorm

Image
1.) Women in Piracy   My first topic is women in Priacy. I don't know if I would like to pick a specific person or talk about different women. If I do go into detail about a specific person I might layout my storybook like a diary. I really liked this idea because I don't really hear a lot about women who became successful pirates and I think it would be a fun project! I was specifically interested in Jacquotte Delahaye. A woman pirate who faked her own death and disguised herself as a man. She eventually led many men in her pirate voyages. Here is a link that has information on  Jacquotte Delahaye and women in piracy:  Jacquotte Delahaye Women in Piracy     Woman pirate 2.) The Grim Brothers The Grimm brothers' stories have always been my favorite since I could remember. There is a lot of interesting stories that I could use as well.  I thought about maybe writing as the grim brothers and their encounter with different characters. I could even switch it up and

Week 2 Story: The Woman in the Sky

There once was a laundress who was growing tired of her labor and complained " This life is too dirty; I want something better. I wish to be an apple tree, where life is easy and the sun shines on me."  A witch heard this plea and said: " You wish to be a tree; then be a tree." The once laundress then became a tree. Unfortunately, she realized that the life of a tree was of giving to the creatures around her. People would come to pick her apples which hurt so much and animals would use her as a home which was a disturbance to her. One day an unfortunate fire started and she was burning and wailed in pain " Ouch this hurts, please! I no longer wish to be a tree I want to be fire. Fire is strong and fearless!"  The witch heard this clamor and said: " If you wish to be fire; then be fire." The laundress opened her eyes and she was the fire. She then realized being fire is too hot and consumes everything with no care. She no longer wanted to be fir

I chose the following stories because they seemed the most interesting to me. I really liked Pygamlion, I am a sucker for stories that include the gods like venus. I also really liked the moral of the man in the moon story. Origin Stories: the moon  The Man in the Moon   Laos Folk-Lore by Katherine Neville Fleeson (1899) - a blacksmith complained that he was not well and that his work was too warm. He said he wanted to be a stone on the mountain and that the mountain is cool because the winds blow and the trees give shade. - a wise man told him to be a stone on the mountain and he became a stone on the mountain. - unfortunately, a stone cutter came to the mountain searching for stone to cut and when he saw the stone that was once the blacksmith he knew that was the stone he wanted. So he began to cut it. - The stone was in great pain and wailed that the cutting hurt and that he no longer wanted to be a stone but thought it would be nice to be a stone-cutter. - The wise man the

Time Strategies

Image
Time Management Picture One of the articles I chose to read was The Important Habit of Just Starting , which basically spoke about getting over the hump of starting a project. This article was perfect for me because that is my main issue is just starting. The article mentioned how many people fall prey to procrastination and I am definitely one of them. One of the reasons is because people can't see the future reward and rather prefer immediate reward. So something I will change from now on is viewing how much doing something will help me in the future. Another important aspect is building the habit of just starting and get the ball rolling. One thing that I do when I feel like I have no motivation is to start with small things or even busy work I can get out of the way and that usually helps me to just get a good pace to do more work. Something that was mentioned in the article that I thought would help me is having a commitment device or something that will keep me in check f

Technology

Computer Clip Art   I am new to blogging and to all of the sites mentioned in this assignment. I am excited to learn and improve my computer skills! I don't really have a lot of experience in technology overall so it will be nice to be able to add these new skills to the list! I would say this class is very different than my other online classes just cause it's not on canvas and its blogging! It's definitely more creative and fun!

Em's Assignments

Inspirational Quote I have never had a class to use a blog post. I like how this class has a fun, interactive, and creative way of learning and doing assignments. I also definitely appreciate that you can go your own pace as well! Personally, I am interested in the storytelling assignments, maybe not so much about writing my own but reading other creative ideas from my classmates! I am interested in the microfiction extra credit assignment just cause it would be pretty interesting to create a story by only using 6 words.

Em's take take on the Growth Mindset

Image
First I would like to start with the concept of the Growth Mindset is Unfamiliar to me but I really liked the idea of it. I came from a school where you always labeled and classified under certain ranges based on your academic accomplishments. Nothing felt worse to me was when I received a bad letter grade and I would remember feeling disheartened and even gave up on learning some of the material all together because I wasn't good enough. I eventually had to learn it but still, it affected me in a way that made me label my self as not good enough in that subject and it followed me through my academic career. The feeling of being dumb or stupid made me not want to work on that subject but completely ignore it and it hindered me because it was a subject that is important for everyday life. I think that if maybe I took the not yet approach mindset I probably would have pushed harder to get better. I think I would like to push myself to think like that because it is an excellent approa

Em's Introduction

Hello! My name is Emily Martinez I am a biology major at OU! The coolest thing about my major is that I've met so many amazing people through it, professors and friends! Also, it has taught me to work really hard for what I want. I also met my boyfriend at OU because we are both biology majors. I don't know if there is a lot that is interesting about me so ill just write some random facts about myself. I am El Salvadoran and originally from California but I don't remember much of California because I moved to pauls valley, Oklahoma when I was 2.  I have four siblings and I am the third out of the four. I have 2 dogs a great Dane named Belle and a german shepherd named Sam. I also have a  bearded dragon named drogon who is a smart little fella! I love to sing but I may not be very good at it. Em's favorite Storybooks

Image
Disney world The first one I came across was The fairy tale world. I am familiar with the fairy tale characters and their stories, but it was an interesting twist on merging them into a reality tv show! The title did tell us enough about the storybook without giving away the twist. When I first came across it I assumed it was about fairy tales with maybe a modern twist. When I read the introduction I didn’t realize it was about putting different fairytales in modern times but having them all live together and seeing their take on the difference between the fairytale world and the actual world, the modern times, and their reactions towards each of the other characters. The introduction does an excellent way of explaining the storyline. The writer made the introduction seem like some type of announcement for the reality tv series explaining that it will consist of fairytales being conjured into real modern time and that these characters will be living toge

El Salvador, my favorite place

Image
El Salvador has always and will always be a special place in my life. I chose El Salvador because my parents were both born there and it defined so much of their life and mine as well. I visited El Salvador when I was eight and then again when I was 18. El Salvador is known to have many people living in poverty and it stuck with me in both visits to appreciate everything I have in my life. In both visits, i realized what my parents gave up and went through to give my siblings and me a better. They also taught us through these visits that helping less fortunate is important. El Salvador taught me important life lessons that will stay with me always and also taught me more about my culture as well. A street in San Miguel where my father is from. This is how typical streets look like in city areas of El Salvador.  The streets were beautiful to walk through because most of the buildings were colorful and had thier own charm to them. A house from a impoverished neighborhood in El S
