How the Chameleon Gained It's Colors

There once was a time when the Chameleon did not have the ability to change into many different colors. He grew tired of not having something special like the other animals. Chameleon would look at the tiger who had its stripes and strength. He would see the butterfly with so many different colors and designs and was amazed by the peacock who had its beautiful colors and feathers.

One day, it walked sadly among a path thinking of how unremarkable it was compared to the other special animals. He grew so pensive, he wasn't thinking about what time it was or the direction he was walking. He eventually walked among a meadow that had a small pond. There was a rainbow that ended right on the surface of the pond. The colors were so vibrant they would reflect on the pond. He saw everything around him and was amazed by the beauty. He wished to be something as beautiful as this one day. He walked to the pond and decided he wanted to bathe in the colorful water where it was not too deep for him.

He enjoyed his time there so much, he came back to his secret pond for five straight days after that. Every day during his time in the water he would pray and appreciate the beauty around him. He would sing a song about the colors and sounds around him. The Iguana would stay there and dream of having the beautiful colors of the rainbow. on the fifth day, he walked out of the pond and he was colorful and was able to change his colors to whatever he desired. He was proud of his new colors and grew to use it to trick predators around him.  The chameleon then thanked the heavens and the earth for its special gift.

Authors note: This story was based on How Bluebird and Coyote Got Their Colors.
The story is about how the bluebird got its color from bathing in a lake. The coyote observed the bird and tried the same method. He was able to obtain the blue color but was distracted by his own vanity.  The coyote ended up falling into the dirt and stayed that way forever. My story was a bit different but I kept some of the aspects similar.  I hope you guys enjoy it!

  1. Hi Em! This story was short and sweet, and that was perfect for this kind of story. I like that you took a different approach to the story in terms of the animal it was about. Chameleons are so cool, and the idea of imagining one wanting to be as pretty as a rainbow is really cute to me. You stayed true to the goal of the original story, too. Great job!

  2. Emily,
I like how you made this story your own. It was simple and adorable. I love chameleons and love how you chose them for this story. As they color change, it makes it perfect for the story you have written. I like how you kept to the original story too and kept it endearing.
